Bridge Engineer Jobs

The demand for qualified bridge engineers remains buoyant, with a range of bridge engineer jobs available for the right candidates across multiple specialisms.

The scope for your engineering career development is great: you could be involved in the design or examination of the safety and integrity of structures as a bridge inspector. Or you could be carrying out feasibility studies, assessment or construction of bridges.

How to succeed in bridge engineering jobs

In most cases, knowledge of bridge design software, covering structural analysis and modelling, is critical. Assessment and inspection of bridge structures forms a key part of bridge engineer jobs. Estimating, cost reporting and project forecasting are other highly desirable attributes.

Typical graduate qualifications include a  civil engineering degree or equivalent. In some cases, a postgraduate MEng is required. You could be a Chartered (or approaching chartership) or Incorporated Engineer.

Highways Agency (HA) standards, policies and processes, including the DMRB and SHWs and BS 5400, are in demand by some employers. Demonstrable experience of Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, Superstress and/or Lusas together with practical experience of finite elements will hold you in good stead.

Focus on your interpersonal skills

To succeed as a bridge engineer, you will need to have excellent interpersonal, organisational and communications skills. You must be a strong team player who is dedicated to the delivery and development of projects. Problem solving and identifying solutions are other pre-requisites of the bridge engineer’s job.
